It is, if the Democrats are closer to the activists' goal of fixing the criminal justice system. The problems of the 2-party system are another issue, and needs to get fixed, as well. Until it is, activists need to get the party that more closely aligns with their interests in power in order to make the changes they want to see.

It brings to mind the back-and-forth in The Trial of the Chicago 7 on Netflix. Tom Hayden tells Sacha Baren Cohen's character that they need to focus on elections. Cohen accuses him of not caring about change or activism, just power. Hayden tells him, "If you don't win elections, you will never change anything."
