I agree with most of what you say, but I wonder if the real culprits here are the for-profit media landscape and the audience. I briefly worked at a large newspaper, and while there I learned just how much they tracked what each online visitor did on their site - from what stories they clicked on and even how far they scrolled down the page. And this was back in 2014! The outlets know what people are interested in, and they're financially motivated to give it to them. I think the problem is just that lots of people were only interested in the trial. I really wish there were some outlet that would do away with the constant speculation and used the time that freed up to cast their net a bit wider about what actually happened
